On the 18th April BCT hosted a community engagement event by The Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore wind farms, in collaboration with environmental experts, Habitat Assessment & Restoration Ltd (HAR). The Bhaltos peninsula and the nearby offshore islands are being considered as locations for a seabird recovery programme. DBS is exploring options to improve seabird habitat by the removal of invasive mammalian predators (e.g. rats), which is widely recognised as an effective conservation method and the project aims to help address concerns about potential impacts of offshore wind farms on guillemot and razorbill populations. Local background knowledge from bird ringers, divers, local companies and the wider public provided useful context and information for the project and it seems that bothy companies now recognise the benefits of extending the biosecurity zones to include the Traigh na Berie Special Area of Conservation, the campsite and other hotspots such as the camping bins at Cliff. This is the first stage in a multi stage process and should prove beneficial to both the community and the environment.
